So is anyone here in a local anime club in their college or something? Well anyways I just became president of my high school anime club...because the previous president became emo and decided to drop out. Now I need a little help. Our anime club is known to suck because well...it sucks. All we did last year is watch stuff that was extremely boring. So any suggestions? I have a couple ideas at the moment which include:
~Showing anime that not too many people know about. What's the point of watching Naruto or Bleach episode 1? I'm sure people would rather discover Mushi-Uta

.
~Discussions. Whether discussing a series, episode, or a Japan related topics (ex. should it be okay to depict underage girls in a sexual manner or whatever).
~Games. I was thinking to do like "Name that Character" or "Name that OP" type of thing.
~Community service. In order to be an official club because now we're on a blacklist or whatever.
So yeah I'd appreciate anyone's suggestions.
I haven't got the courage to go to my anime club, I fell it would be better off if I created a club for the study of modern visual culture...yes damn it I would want a Genshiken club YOU KNOW IT WOULD BE AWESOME, but anyway I will be my words of...just words. Honestly don't show stuff that can be seen on TV, really that is like the one thing that annoys me, the next person I see talk about the new Naruto on cartoon network I will strangle...but really if your looking for other stuff, there is a crap load of dojin stuff you can show, like dojin games because though experance I know a lot of them are 'clean' so try to hit a con as a group and...thats all I can think of at teh moment.
A lot of anime clubs seem to have the problem of watching stuff that everyone has already seen ... (mine does too, which is why I stopped going -- oh, yeah, and the leadership is completely unorganized and doesn't plan any other events x.x)
Which reminds me: Always make posters for events, because otherwise no one will know about them (seems obvious I know, but my anime club doesn't).
Anyway, the discussions and games both sound good. I personally don't like the idea of showing fansubs in anime club, mostly because I could download them and watch them on my own, but so long as they're not too popular, it could be a good idea. I'd be more interested in my anime club if they showed older licensed series that aren't so well known anymore (i.e., Orphen, Vampire Princess Miyu, heck, anything released in Japan before 2001) -- maybe stuff that would be available for rental but isn't available in stores anymore.
I second bladegirl's suggestions; just doing random field trips to places like the nearest Asian grocery store is always fun in my opinion ^^ Cosplay contests (for Halloween especially, though it's getting close) are a good idea too. Really, just doing something other than only watching anime is good. Heck, in my high school anime club we worked on making our own "anime." I only got to do a bit of in-betweening and what we ended up with was a low quality, few minute black and white trailer, but it was still awesome.
I've never watched Genshinken actually. Is it really that good? I dunno...I was always kinda turned off by it for some reason. I'll download the first episode and see.
As far as cons go, the only thing we have is AX and that's in the summer. Though a couple of my friends were planning to actually book a hotel, it might be fun if we do a fundraiser so we could all book rooms. Asian markets are frequent where I live (half my school is KOREAN FOB) but an anime store or Mitsuwa would be cool.
I know downloading fansubs isn't the best (and it's illegal too) but most of the people in the club are too dumb to torrent and watch off of youtube and crunchyroll. In fact, a lot of people that join probably won't know much past Naruto, FMA, and Bleach considering I was asked by almost everyone who Shana was. So exposure is first. Also, as far as old shows go well...I didn't watch any, don't know many, and I certainly don't own anything. So that might impose a bit of a problem.
Thanks guys ^^. I've been freaking out but now I feel much better =D.
Thanks for the replies everybody. They were really helpful.
Unrelated, but Amanda, that claymore character album thread is getting out of hand, can we lock further commenting or something?
Yeah I noticed that too. I personally think it's better just to leave it alone and I don't know like put up a bunch of articles quickly to leave it in the dust. It is rather ugly though. Maybe we should just delete the damn article? I got my point across and that's all that matters.
Interesting semi-coincidence, because one of the guys in my Jap class wants to create a Jap club or something to that effect, and we have absolutely no idea what to do.(maybe people from A2M are destined to meet and overcome this obstacle???) He only came up with this idea recently, and coerced persuaded me into helping out. Fortunately, he already sorted out the pre-preparations (not that there's really any at all in a high school club), so now we are simply left with the mind-boggling question of Exactly what IS a Japanese club? And apparently we r meeting on Fri. to come to a final truth, hopefully reaching the light at the end of the tunnel and maybe attain nirvana along the way.
With all that irrelevant details said, stuff that we talked about now and then are like hosting a game tourney, lesson on making sushi, hosting a game tourney, writing kanji, hosting a game tourney, and other stuff that I totally can't remember at the moment...other than hosting a game tourney.
Still with me? Now this could work for our club because the purpose and definition of the club is broad and vague, but I'm not so sure if it can be applied to strictly an anime club. Well, people probably wouldn't mind hosting a game tourney though. (Want to strangle me yet? Maybe sometime soon?) Hopefully that helps. I might use some of the ideas that others has posted too. I definitely like the idea of hosting a game tourney though XD. (If you still don't feel like strangling me, you must have the patience and virtue of a saint.)
We don't have sponsors. We're a freaking high school club that's slowly evolving from a joke to an actual club. Hopefully.
Anyways. First meeeting happened. Not a bad turn-out since the whole damn school is raining ashes and we have to eat inside anyways. We watched Seirei no Moribito and it's cool.
Now for next week....
"Raining ashes"?? Where the heck are you?
Lucky you not to have to have a sponsor or justify your existance as "educational".
If you can do whatever you want, I'd recommend doing a lot of things that involve food. That always brings people in.
It's called the OC where there have been a ton of fires thanks to some jackasses arsonists.
We still have to do community service. School rule. And food has to meet the "California standards" ><.
Language clubs were common at my high school. They were mainly for students of a particular language and didn't involve the rest of the school. I belonged to the Spanish club and the Latin club. The Spanish club did very little. The Latin club did things like build a catapult or dress up in costume and have a Roman feast. So I guess it depends on how creative you are and what your school will let you get away with.
I suspect your sponsor (you do have to have one don't you?) will expect you to do things that involve learning about traditional Japanese culture, rather than Japanese pop culture. I suppose you could argue that at least some anime teaches you about Japanese culture. I'm not sure if the game tourney will fly though.
Uuuuu a Latin club, I'd like to try one. Our school doesn't even offer Latin as a language course option >.> As for sponsor....we have a supervisor-esque existence, but I don't really know if she can be counted as a "sponsor"... Well, if our club flies -granted that we can actually get it to work out since it's not even officially established yet- I might be able to extort demand humbly ask for some financial allocations from a higher authority, but I doubt any money is coming our way. Which can be a good and bad thing such as you've stated. The game tourney thing was more of a joke than serious suggestion: I do realize the implications with school rules and having to work out a fair enjoyment should the number of members (potentially, theoretically, hopefully) exceed the numbers of fingers I got on my hands (8?). I'll see if we can work something out by next week, post it here, ask for feedbacks, and maybe help out our resident club president.
Kiseki_gurl: In Canada, you can eat whatever you want short of human flesh and cute little puppy dogs. But yes, food is always a good bribery. As for showing anime, I'd try lucky star. Now, I know I may have a bias since I'm a kyoani fanboy, but I do truly believe that it's a show that allows most, if not all, people to connect with, even if the person has little to no background in the anime realm (although the pleasure will only be a fraction as great as someone who does). Of course, if seirei no moribito has worked so far, it would be best to follow through with that first.
