When the first few episodes came out on fansub, you hear about it everyday. Now I don't hear about it anymore. I haven't finished the anime yet and I lost interest after reading a number of chapters of the manga. It starts out amazing but the interest factor dies for me in the middle of the story.
I dropped Death Note half way through. I couldn't stand it anymore. It was SO BORING. I guess I wasn't the only one.
I thought death note was ok. Read the entire manga. There were several really low and slow moving points in the story, but overall the story kept true to its original intentions. The whole brain battle was amusing too. As far as I can tell, there's only two climaxes worth seeing:

L's death and Light's death
But overall, I had fun reading...and dying from lack of sleep trying to finish the series in 3 days lol. As for the hype thing, I guess what goes up always come down.
For me, the main problem with Death Note is that it deeply depends on suspense and plot twists. I think it did great with this at first, but after a while it gets a bit stale and the twists can become either obvious or contrived. Also, a super-perfect (though evil) protagonist can get tiring--I always liked L better, and after a certain point, well ... it wasn't worth watching for me anymore. *Though I still kind of hope I can finish it someday*
Didn't DeathNote get licensed? A bunch of fansubbers dropped it because of that. I read the entire manga so I know what happens and how it ends. The anime was eh for me. It was like re-reading something that I didn't really like to read to begin with. I'm not a super fan of mystery stuff like Deathnote. It ends up boring the crap out of me. And Senna-chan, L is the best charrie xD
I'm not really a fan of Death Note, but I can't say I've read or watched a lot of it. The live action look interesting though, and the IRON CHEIF is one dudes dad and the Chilli Peppers do the theme songs.
I read the whole series for Deathnote (sort of), it got a little complicated halfway when someone "important" died, so I started skipping parts of it. The ending of the 2nd movie for Deathnote was a bit too abrupt, and too slow-paced, but the characters were portrayed very nicely and convincingly (even better than I imagined).
I agree it went down hill in the middle of the story i finished it but dont think its that great
