????????
(Kore wa yabai zo!)

"This ain't good!"

Example: ????????????????????
(Ano tora wa kocchi ni kuru yo. Kore wa yabai zo!)

"That tiger is coming over here. This ain't good!"

EDIT: Added transliteration for the example.
Great! Hey manabi, how about putting some Japanese translations that is not in Japanese text for the sample sentence? ^_^

Oh by the way...
Another suggestion... Since we already have a whole forum for this phrase of the day, I think it will be better if you start a new thread for each phrase of the day. That way we can easily find the phrase of the day for a particular day other than scanning a single thread.

I'll be using this "Phrase of the Day" to promote our forum as well. ^_^

Thanks!

EDIT: I hope you don't mind but I fixed that already. Tongue

You mean you want the transliteration (romaji) for the example, right?

On another note, it's pretty difficult to do this everyday so as y'all can see I do a new one about every few days or so, hope that's alright!

As long as there's no need for us to bust down your doors, tis fine. On the other hand, I would like to try busting down someone's door at least once in my life.

And I think Darren wants you to translate anything that isn't Eng. Even though this section isn't made with the beginner in mind, some people probably can't read Jap even though they've watched lots of anime lol. (I was there at some point during my short life XD)

yup! yup! that's it! I didn't know how to explain it well, sorry. Tongue anyways, we understand if you can't do this everyday. Big Grin

Ano tora wa kocchi ni kuru yo.

I don't know why but that really made me laugh.

At least someone found it funny (I had little intention for it to be humorous though lol). Tongue

Why is ?? in katakana when the rest of the phrase isn't? I thought that was for foreign words, but I really don't understand how this stuff works.

Actually it's ??? in katanana. What we have to remember with Japanese is, there are many variations and inconsistencies within the language, just as any other language. Using katanana for a hiragana word can be a way to emphasize something (think italics in English). You can view it as "This ain't good" in English. Many Japanese words follow this pattern, but they may not be of the same reason; for example, ???(ore, "I" in male form) is usually written in katakana. Why? I have absolutely no idea. Sometimes we have to just take it as it is... Tongue

Such a confusing language! I can recognize some phrases that I hear in anime, but I don't think I'll ever be able to read Japanese. Although I am trying to learn what I can on my own, and I appreciate your "phrase of the day" topic.

When we think Japanese is a difficult and confusing language, imagine what the Japanese think of the English language, which as a ESL person myself (although my English skills now far surpasses my Chinese), can easily say that English is by far the hardest language to learn, and I've learned quite a few (Japanese, French, Latin).

And thank you for your comments! Smile
