Hello. New poster.

Did Japanese couples traditionally celebrate their wedding anniversary? I'd guess no since people didn't seem to celebrate individual stuff such as birthdays.
Well, as far as I'm aware of, celebrating marriage anniversaries as a tradition is a relatively new concept of our time. In the old days, marriages were usually more for political, social and financial purposes, so people really didn't see it as much of a deal as we do today. This applies to pretty much the entire world. They might have done it privately, I'm not sure, but I don't think it was considered important enough to cause a huge social gathering. As for birthdays, I'm pretty sure aristocratic families do celebrate it, and probably less grand celebrations for commoners as well, hence the tradition such as shichi-go-san (note that this ritual is for a more generalized "coming of age" celebration, not to be confused with individual parties we have today). If I got anything down wrong, please correct me.
That sounds about right. I wonder if any marriages at all were based on love, or if it was all arranged. That seems very sad to me, but I guess if that's how you're raised...

Thanks for the info.
