What do they mean? I honestly don't know. Tongue
Let's see ... I'd say that in the generic sense they just mean a boy or girl who is a fan of something ^^ ... Then again, it's really a stronger word than that, implying that they are not just a casual fan; they like it so much that they may be borderline obsessed with it (or at least they're not afraid to let people know they like it). For example, a yaoi fangirl is not just someone who is casually interested in one or two boys love couples. She's probably read a good number of yaoi manga (or has slashed characters in other manga) and may write fanfiction or draw fanart of her favorite characters or be part of a community where other people do. But I guess those aren't really requirements either ...

I would consider myself an Escaflowne fangirl because I own the whole series and am familiar with it, and I've written some fanfiction about it and so on. I love it and I talk about it with others who have seen it. I would not consider myself a fangirl of the Orphen series because while I like it, I am not part of any community for it and I wouldn't list it as one of my favorite anime. I guess it's really hard to define terms like this ^^;; (And of course, there are rabid fangirls and regular fangirls too, and on and on x.x )
I'm used to thinking of fanboy/fangirl as a derogatory way of referring to someone who's a fan to such an extreme that it's ridiculous (i.e, crazier than you are...)
^ Yup that's my definition.
I'd say someone who is so into a anime or manga that they to conventions dressed in poorly made cosplays and are part of the huge crowd that tries to engulf writers, artist, and voice actors.plus also people who make shrines and try to kill anybody that talks ill of their obssesion...
